‘Urr Thar Yoo.’

She tapped herself on the chest and said ‘Maya.’ Then she gestured eloquently towards her new furry friend. ‘And you are?’

He tapped himself on his chest too, and said ‘Ma Yah,’ and broke into another giggling fit.

‘That always works in plays,’ said Maya apologetically. ‘It was worth a shot, don’t you think?’

They gathered around her, blinking, smiling and bowing.

Then a little blue one walked up to her and offered her a fruit. She took it, vaguely wondering if it were poisoned. To be safe, she muttered a Fructifus Hex and turned it into a guava before biting into it. The guava almost melted as soon as her teeth touched it; the gooey mess on her face sent them into more paroxysms of mirth. The problem with transforming fruits in high-magic atmospheres was that the final product was likely to be terribly overripe. Still, she thought, a messy face was a small price to pay for new friends.
